Coding Your Web Site

Style

Let's say a few words about style, the way your site looks. Style in any kind of artistic expression, such as writing or music, is a personal matter, and tastes will vary. However, there are some basic principles you should keep in mind as your design your site.
  1. Keep it simple. The novice web site designed sometimes loads his or her new site with different font types, colors, illustrations, and effects. It not only reduces the load time, but the Photoshop vomit splash page is visually repelling. As in architecture, the concept that form follows function and less is more are good principles. Your job isn't to impress your viewer, but to communicate information or sell products. Don't be afraid to use a background color of white and text of black and only one or two colors. Aim for clarity and consistency.
  2. Be kind to your viewer. Don't ask your guest to do too much. As much as you make like the effect, if you ask the viewer to install a plug in, enter their name, do a lot of navigation, or close windows, chances are you'll probably loose him or her. If you must have a plug-in, do it on a secondary page and provide an alternative page to get to the same information. Pop-up windows should be unobtrusive and should automatically time out.
  3. Learn from other sites. Some of the shops in our cybermall have excellent sites. There are also some good site showplaces, such as Cool Home Pages. When you see a site that is particularly striking, learn as much as you can from it, without, of course, plagerizing it. Alternatively, there is much you can learn from badly designed sites.
Well, as you can see, there's nothing especially hard about creating a web page. But you do need to be thoughtful and enterprising to separate your site from the vast number of sites of lesser quality.
