Coding Your Web Site

Building the HEAD

Web pages generally consist of two parts, the HEAD and the BODY. The HEAD contains the head of a HTML document, consisting of the title and meta information. The META tags give more information about your document, such as who created it. It also contains keywords to allow search engines to find your web page.
Here is the HEAD portion for the page that you are looking at now:

<head>
<title>HOW TO 03.</title>
<meta type="description" content="How to Code on the Internet">
<META NAME="Keywords" Content="Web design,HTML code,Javascript code,coding examples">
<meta http-equiv="Content-language" content="en-US">
<meta name="rating" content="General">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="30 days">
<meta name="ROBOTS" content="INDEX,FOLLOW">
<meta name="Distribution" content="Global">
<meta name="Author" content="Philip Wik">
<meta name="Copyright" content="2001 www.mymallandnews.com">
</head>

Search engines continue to get more sophisticated, relying more on natural language parsing and less on meta keywords. Some search engines also have word count limitations, generally around 250 words. Also, search engines may penalize or exclude the site if the words are duplicated so as to spam the engine into giving your site a high ranking. The best policy is to include META tags, but focus your efforts in developing text content.
Clip the code on this page and modify the HEAD section of the code you have already created.
