Southern Corn Cakes






1 1/2 cups corn meal
1 1/2 cups boiling water
3/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon shortening
1 tablespoon molasses
1/2 cup flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; scald corn meal in boiling water, and add milk, shortening and molasses; mix dry ingredients with meal mixture well, and beat until smooth batter; bake on hot, slightly greased griddle, turning cakes but once.
